Major Stock Exchange Introduction

London Stock Exchange (LSE) is one of the most important international financial markets in the world, and provides listing and trading of equity, debt and other securities. It is located at the heart of the world’s leading financial center. Within those listed companies in LSE, a number of them are from overseas.

The Alternative Investment Market (AIM), which is a sub-market of LSE, is an international trading market for small and fast-growing companies. There are many different types of companies in the AIM, such as emerging and risk capital companies, and also companies that are about to expand.

Some overseas companies are listed on the U.K. financial markets through the use of Depositary Receipts (DRs) – the Great Britain Depositary Receipt (GDRs) and the European Depositary Receipts (EDRs).

London Stock Exchange (LSE)

The LSE, which was established in 1801, is located in London and is one of the largest stock exchanges in the world. It merged with Borsa Italiana in October 2007 to form London Stock Exchange Group, which is a leading diversified exchange business in Europe.

The LSE focuses in four major areas:
  • Equity markets – for capital rising of companies
  • Trading services – for securities trading, such as equities, debts, ETFs, DRs, etc.
  • Information services – providing real-time prices and news
  • Derivatives

PLUS Markets Group

PLUS is an international retail-focused stock exchange based in London. It offers listing and trading services. There are over 100 securities for trading, and that include London-listed shares, European liquid shares, and shares quoted on PLUS-quoted and AIM.

Major Index Introduction

FT 30

It is based on the share prices of 30 British companies. It began in 1935 and is the oldest continuous index in the U.K.

FTSE 100 Index

This index comprises the 100 most highly capitalized blue chip companies, representing approximately 81% of the UK market.

FTSE 250 Index

The FTSE 250 comprises mid-capitalized companies not covered by the FTSE 100, and represents approximately 15% of UK market capitalization.

FTSE 350 Index

It is a combination of the FTSE 100 Index of the largest 100 companies and the FTSE 250 Index of the next largest 250.

FTSE SmallCap Index

The FTSE small-cap consists of companies outside of the FTSE 350 Index and represents approximately 2% of the UK market capitalization.

FTSE All-Share Index

Representing 98-99% of UK market capitalization, FTSE All-Share is the aggregation of the FTSE 100, FTSE 250 and FTSE Small Cap Indices.

FTSE AIM UK 50 Index

It is a market capitalized-weighted stock market index of 50 largest UK companies, which are listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM).
